Do any of you use Apple Numbers to create charts for insertion into InDesign? I’m currently using Illustrator to make dozens upon dozens of graphs for our company’s research reports and I’m getting tired of its fairly primitive graphing capability.

I’ve been poking around for alternatives and there don’t seem to be many good options. Numbers looks somewhat promising, but we’re on PCs, so I can’t try it unless I upgrade my iCloud account so I can use iWork.

Thoughts?

That’s a very nice kitten.

FileMaker has really great graphing tools if you wanted to go a more advanced route.

My meeting today went something like this:

guy: I want to build 10 units

me: you have room for six, you also only have enough parking for 6 units

guy: well what if you do this: “blah blah blah”

me: no those are too small, those dont work. none of that works

guy: well try it your own way. see you next week to review the 10 units

me: yea whatever

its fairly primitive graphing capability.

Let me guess - no kitten shaped lines and only two perpendicular lines at a time?

Yeah, and the blue ink refused to print red.

Me: yeah, well, I’ll be at your mom’s house. Do you need directions?

Now can you 99 of them? All perpendicular.

I don’t know that they’ll be as glossy as Numbers, but it definitely better for large datasets.

My wife’s version:

Client: We would like to have a ribbon cutting in August. We would like for you to build a new building and have it fully furnished in time for our ribbon cutting.

This happened in April of this year.

Is it any wonder she decided to quit?

She just wrapped up work. The handoff was epic. She has a huge hand-written table with all of her active projects, the primary contact, the contract number, and who it was handed off to.

She started studying this week and plans for the next exam in three weeks. It’s going to be intense.

That looks pretty good for analysis, but not as much for aesthetic design.

Why do you need to make bad charts anyway?
For some kind of advert?

I need to make good charts. I work for a commercial real estate research company and we publish a number of research reports that have tons of graphs and tables in them.

I think spss can do what you want to, but it creates no thrills charts that don’t distort data. If i remember correctly it had some beautifying options but I never used them.

So if you need eyecandy to keep interest it’s probably not the best one.

It’s not that we need it to keep interest, we’ve been publishing our reports for 40+ years, we’re just looking for ways to keep things looking fresh.
